The Torp TC500 2.X replaces the stock controller in the Talaria MX5. Plug-and-play install — you plug into the factory connectors, no cutting and no soldering. All the tuning happens in the Torp app on your phone.

What it changes

  • Three independent ride modes. Each one gets its own motor and battery current, speed limit, throttle response and regen level. That is effectively three different bikes under one key.
  • Your own throttle curve. The stock MX5 hits its power in a step. If you ride technical ground, a gentler curve will do more for you than another few kilowatts — the rear stops cutting out on roots.
  • It talks to the stock BMS. Torp is the only maker of aftermarket controllers that keeps communication with the factory BMS alive. You get the power without bypassing the pack's protection, and you see the voltage of every cell in the app.
  • The factory features keep working. Kickstand sensor, tip-over sensor, mode button, brake sensor and the stock display — all stay functional.
  • Motor protection even without a temperature sensor. If the sensor dies in the middle of a hard ride, Torp still won't let the motor overheat. On other controllers the same failure means a new sensor or a new motor.
  • Overcurrent protection under 1 μs. It reacts to a current spike faster than you can notice it.
  • Firmware updates over Bluetooth. No cables and no trip to a workshop — after every update you only repeat the calibration.

What it fits

  • Bike: Talaria Sting MX5 — the kit comes with a harness made for this model
  • Stock MX5 motor: yes
  • Battery: 60–80 V nominal, up to 22S (92.4 V fully charged) — the stock MX5 pack and aftermarket packs
  • Does not fit: the Talaria MX3, MX4 and Sting R — those have their own TC500 version; it also does not fit the Sur-Ron Ultra Bee, which needs the TC1000

Important before you buy

  • The MX5 harness is different from the MX3/MX4 one. Talaria changed the wiring on the MX5 and the kits are not interchangeable. If you have a Sting R or an earlier year, take the MX3/MX4 version — linked above.
  • The real power limit is the battery, not the controller. The stock MX5 pack will not deliver the current the highest settings need. On the factory battery you'll see a clear gain, but the 30 kW ceiling only opens up with a stronger pack and motor. Start on a lower power level and raise it as you strengthen the rest of the bike.
  • The harnesses are not waterproof, even though the controller is IP67. Pack every connector with the dielectric grease supplied. The warranty does not cover faults after riding through streams and flooded roads.
  • Calibration before the first ride is mandatory — with the rear wheel off the ground, because it spins during the procedure. Same again after every firmware update.
  • Launch Assist and Lift Assist need a Torp display — Torp Mini or Torp Full Color.
  • Road legality. Changing the controller changes the vehicle's parameters. If you ride on public roads, check what that means for your registration.

Questions people actually ask

TC500 or TC1000 for the MX5?
TC500 — if you're staying on the stock battery and stock motor and want a clearly livelier bike. TC1000 — if you're planning a stronger pack and building a machine aimed at big numbers. On a stock MX5 both give a similar result, because the battery is the limit, not the electronics. The difference only shows once the pack stops being the bottleneck.

Does the stock MX5 display still work?
Yes. Torp controllers leave the stock display fully functional. The app and the Torp display are an addition, not a replacement.

Do I have to buy a Torp display to tune the controller?
No. All the tuning, diagnostics and updates run from the free Torp app over Bluetooth. You buy a display for two reasons: so you don't have to hold a phone on the bars, and to unlock Launch Assist and Lift Assist.

Does the install need any wiring cut?
No. You plug into the factory connectors, bolt the controller down with its cover and calibrate in the app. Bolts, tools and grease are in the box. Realistically about 20 minutes.

Do I have to bypass the battery?
No. Torp is the only maker that keeps communication with the factory BMS. You get the power without switching off the pack's protection — and you still see the state of every cell in the app.

What about a pressure washer and water crossings?
The controller is IP67, but the harness connectors are not waterproof. Dielectric grease in every plug is a condition, not a suggestion. Riding through streams and flooded sections is explicitly excluded from the manufacturer's warranty.

Do it properly — add to the kit

  • Torp Mini display — without it you can't turn on Launch Assist and Lift Assist, which you've already paid for inside the controller
  • Torp Full Color display — a large colour IPS screen with a separate button for the ride modes
  • Guts seat cover for the MX5 — more power means more work with your legs; the smooth stock cover starts getting in the way
