Who needs one

Two reasons. The practical one: it shields the front of the bike and the light from stones, which genuinely matters when you ride in a group — it's your mate's rear wheel that throws up the biggest stones.

The second: it's one of the cheapest ways to change the character of the bike from "bicycle" to motocross — especially paired with a race number and graphics.
